    Liz Rulli was appointed Associate Vice President for Research in 2008 with an emphasis on research administration. She leads all research-related aspects of pre- and post-award operations, compliance and is responsible for the financial and administrative affairs of all units reporting to Notre Dame Research. Liz has more than 20 years experience in university and research administration; prior to joining Notre Dame Research, Liz was Director of Financial Affairs for the Vice President for Research at Purdue University. Liz has a Bachelors of Science in Management and a Masters of Science in Management from Purdue University.

In this role, he assists faculty and other principal investigators in the College of Science with grant applications and other pre-award activities. Ed came to the University of Notre Dame from Saint Mary’s College, where he served as Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations. Additionally, he has experience in development, fundraising, and grant writing through previous positions at Knox College and Roosevelt University.

    In 2023, Rachel Crites joined the Pre-Award Team with Notre Dame Research. In this role, Rachel advises principal investigators in grant proposal development. In addition to this appointment, Rachel works for the Department of Biological Sciences at Notre Dame as a Term Assistant Teaching Professor. She is the primary instructor of Human Anatomy. Prior to this position, Rachel gained experience teaching human anatomy to Notre Dame juniors/seniors and first year medical students from Indiana University School of Medicine - South Bend.

    In 2022, Rachel Crites graduated with her Master of Science in Biology from the University of Notre Dame. Before joining Notre Dame, Rachel graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Evolution and Ecology from the Ohio State University. During undergrad, she completed several research projects to graduate with research distinction. Rachel also spent one summer in Chicago, where she conducted research at The Field Museum of Natural History. Rachel has presented at local, region, and national conferences, supports women in science, and has a passion for student mentorship.

    Allison (Sheets) DeBlock joined Notre Dame Research in 2017 and serves as Pre-Award Program Manager. She is responsible for providing assistance to Notre Dame faculty in the development of proposals for external funding. Allison graduated from Saint Mary’s College with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a minor in Gender Studies. She graduated in 2017 from Clemson University with a Master of Science in Applied Sociology and has previously worked for several nonprofits in the South Bend area, including the YWCA of North Central Indiana and the Council on Aging of Elkhart County.

She joined the University of Notre Dame in 2011 as the Assistant Director of the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts (ISLA) in the College of Arts and Letters. Before joining Notre Dame, Lori spent 13 years as a research project supervisor at the University of Chicago. She received her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and master’s degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Greg also serves as the Export Control Officer, where he provides strategic and active management of the export compliance program for the University. Greg is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He also has a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Greg served 22 years with the United States Navy as a naval flight officer.

Prior to her work in Research Administration, Jacque worked at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division as a Logistics Analyst and Acquisition Quality Manager. Jacque earned her MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University, with a BFA in the History of Art and BA in Design from the University of Kansas.

    Jess Stroud joined Notre Dame Research in 2021 from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she served in a number of different roles, first as a senior pre-award specialist in the Office of Sponsored Programs, with the primary responsibility of submitting grants to a variety of private, state, and federal sponsors; then as the contracts manager position of reviewing, negotiating, and drafting all incoming and outgoing research-related agreements and compliance oversight of the conflict of interest program and export controls; later becoming the manager of grant support in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Prior to UWM, she was part of the research contracts team at the University of Iowa. At Notre Dame, Jess is a senior contracts program manager, responsible for drafting, reviewing, and negotiating research-related agreements.

Prior to this role, Dante worked for Moffitt Cancer Center where he served as the Manger of Division Grant Operations, with the primary responsibility of providing oversight to the grant support team for the divisions of Population and Quantitative Science. Prior to this role, she began her career at Notre Dame in 2005, working in Corporate and Foundation Relations as the Assistant Director for Research Analysis where she identified and partnered with NGOs, foundations, and corporations that aligned with Notre Dame’s educational and research initiatives. Before joining Notre Dame, Lori spent nearly a decade as a small business consultant, where she partnered with clients to strategically develop, grow, and streamline the management of their companies. Lori has Bachelors of Business from Bethel College.

Jeff has been with the University since 1992, where he served the Office of Student Financial Services as a member of the Senior Management Team and was responsible for administering the University’s scholarship program. He is also “Double Domer,” holding an undergraduate degree in accounting and a master’s degree in administration from the University of Notre Dame.

    Sunny Thompson joined Notre Dame Research (NDR) in May 2022. Sunny is a Certified Research Administrator with seasoned experience in higher education. Her career began at Arizona State University and includes positions at both UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) and Texas Lutheran University. She has worked in leadership roles at varied levels ranging from managing an individual research group up to central administration including pre-award, post-award, and lifecycle research administration. Sunny is an active member of the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), the Colleges of Liberal Arts Sponsored Programs (CLASP) group, and the Research Administration Demonstration (RAD) group all working to hone best practices and share this knowledge. She is a graduate of Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in Communication and History.

Prior to coming to Notre Dame, Katrina supported inner-city education in Indianapolis as the Grants Manager for the first turnaround school operator in secondary education in Indiana.

    Carolina Avendano serves as the Strategic Projects Program Director for Notre Dame Research Administration and Compliance (NDRAC). She works closely with and supports the director in managing program priorities, initiatives, and activities. Carolina comes to NDRAC with more than 10 years of experience in research administration and collaborative research efforts; prior to joining NDRAC she was the Director of Research Operations for the Children’s Environmental Health Initiative. Before coming to Notre Dame in 2020, Carolina held positions as the Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Support Office, and the Director of Programs and Operations for the Office of STEM Engagement at Rice University. Carolina holds a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Texas A&M University, and a B.S. in Chemistry from Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI.

    Shannon Marien joined Notre Dame Research in 2016 as a Research Business Intelligence Analyst. She is responsible for designing, creating and delivering reports on University research and scholarly activity as well as managing the data for these activities. Shannon also supports the faculty and staff on a number of software systems used in electronic research administration. Before joining Notre Dame, Shannon worked as a Senior Data Analyst at Heraeus Kulzer in South Bend. Shannon graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education Studies with a minor in Biology.

    Kevin joined Notre Dame Research in 2014 as a Research Business Intelligence Analyst. In this role, Kevin assists in managing data and reporting on University research and scholarly activity. In addition, he helps to support and maintain a number of internal and external software systems used in electronic research administration (eRA). Prior to joining Notre Dame, Kevin spent 10 years in account management in the database fulfillment industry and five years as an IT project manager in the product fulfillment industry. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

    Holly Bizoe serves as the Compliance Administrative Assistant for the Notre Dame Research Administration and Compliance (NDRAC) team. She fulfils administrative duties for the growing Compliance division in a fluid role supporting multiple directors. Holly graduated from Bethel University in 2021 with a bachelor's degree in Organizational Management. Prior to joining the NDRAC team she served as a Program Specialist with Oak Ridge Associated Universities supporting multiple National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and U.S. Department of Energy postdoctoral fellowships and graduate internship programs that are hosted at national laboratories across the country.

    As the Research Policy & Compliance Program Director, Lori leads the NDRAC program that helps navigate researchers through the ever-changing landscapes of federal regulations around conflict of interest, conflict of commitment, outside activities, undue foreign influence, and disclosure requirements. Lori joined Notre Dame Research in 2015 and has serviced the research community as both the Director of Grants Program Management and in Research Contracting roles. Prior to joining Notre Dame, Lori spent 18 years working for various municipal government agencies throughout Southern California. Lori received her bachelor’s degree in English from California State University, Long Beach.

He works with faculty, staff, and students to ensure compliance with University research policy and procedures, as well as federal and state statutes and regulations for research.  Eric graduated from Hanover College with a bachelor’s degree in biology and also holds a law degree from Ohio Northern University. Previously, Eric worked at Indiana University in research compliance and with the State of Indiana in licensing compliance.

Before joining NDR, Swarna worked as an IRB Specialist at the University of Miami. Swarna has a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from Osmania University in Hyderabad, India and a Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Aston University, UK.

    Nina Zimmerman joined the Notre Dame Research in 2019 as the IACUC and IBC Program Coordinator. She is primarily responsible for assisting investigators in the preparation of IACUC and IBC applications, as well as coordinating those applications for presentation to the IACUC and IBC at scheduled monthly meetings. Nina is a 2015 graduate of North Carolina State University, with a bachelor’s degree in Zoology. Before arriving at Notre Dame, she worked as an IACUC assistant for 2.5 years with NC State University.
